Instrumentation
4-Part Ensemble of any combination
Performance notes
This work can be performed by an ensemble of any size and any instrument so long as the performance directions are followed (e.g. a suspended cymbal is probably to be avoided for its sustain through rests). Percussion is encouraged (whether tuned or not) but is not essential. Amplification for individual instruments can be used if required but only to balance volume and not to add any additional effects. The 8ve may be changed if unplayable by the performer but this is not desirable.
This work should be performed in a pulsing legato style throughout. Rests must be strictly silent. The performance should feel certain and determined. Dynamics and phrasing should be strictly related and decided by the performers – this should not be led by an individual but should happen organically during performance.
Mutes: each player can choose whether to play with a mute or not (any kind of mute is usable). No change is permitted once the performance has started.
Pianos/Keyboards: piano/keyboard lids (if applicable) should be kept closed.
The chosen playing technique by each player cannot be changed after
the performance has begun.
N.B. No performer playing 2-parts should play parts 2&3 together.
The performers should be arranged according to the diagram below. Additional performers can just be added according to the pattern.
